Deepening the Senses – ‘Crossing the Threshold’ Day Retreat – January 6th 2018 – Nollaig na mBan

“In a way winter is the real spring, the time when the inner things happen, the resurge of nature” – Edna O’ Brien

“The psyches and souls of women also have their own cycles and seasons of doing and solitude, running and staying, being involved and being removed, questing and resting, creating and incubating, being of the world and returning to the soul-place”

– Clarissa Pinkola Estés

January is a time of the year for contemplation and reflection. We are on the threshold between the Old and the New Year, this is a time of letting go of what is past and welcoming the new.

‘Deepening the Senses’ Day retreat takes place on January 6th, Nollaig na mBan or ‘Women’s Christmas’. This is a unique ancient Irish pagan tradition where women, on this day, stopped their daily work and spent the day or evening at the fire side in the company of other women, sharing their stories, passions, songs and lives as a celebration of themselves and the mother goddess.

On January 6th we will light the fire once more and meet at the threshold of this New Year for a nourishing Day Retreat. Often in our lives we arrive at thresholds. At those times we can ask ourselves – What am I leaving? What am I about to enter? What gifts would enable me to do it?

Our life thresholds are often accompanied by great complexity of emotions-, confusion, fear, excitement, sadness and hope. This is one reason why such vital threshold crossings, in our ancient wisdom, were always clothed in ritual. On this Retreat we will acknowledge and celebrate this meeting at the threshold and this crossing.

During our ‘Deepening the Senses’ Day Retreat we deepen into the world of the senses – awakening a more grounded authentic connectedness to ourselves and bringing conscious awareness in our bodies to our presence in the world. We will awaken our own creative wellspring, by learning to attune more deeply to our senses, the aliveness in our bodies, and learn to listen to the wisdom that is held within. So often in our lives, for many reasons, we listen more to our thoughts than we do to our embodied selves. When we learn to connect to our bodies it talks to us in the language of sensations, letting us know how we really are in every moment. When we learn to connect inward we learn how to support ourselves more fully in our lives.

This work will help us to deepen our understanding of ourselves in an embodied way drawing on the wisdom of myth, dreams and the external landscape. By attuning to our own inner journeying we will begin to appreciate in our subtle bodies the richness of the present moment in our lives.
This is work that draws on neuroscientific evidence based research, psycho therapeutic theories and practices from an Embodied/Gestalt, Attachment and Jungian perspective.

When we listen to myths, if we let ourselves step into their world of poetry and imagination, we step out of the rational concrete patriarchal world of our time and into the symbolic life. In this way we become receptive to our inner environment, and the energies of life and the archetypal patterns living through us.

During the retreat we will spend time indoors and outdoors exploring that sensory embodied connection. The day will be a mixture of myth, dream work, meditation and Art work as well as poetry and gentle mindful movement. The day retreat will provide a nurturing space with time to let go of everyday commitments and attune to ourselves.

There will be free time to walk in the lovely woodlands surrounding the centre, or rest in the sanctuary itself by the log fire. It is a day of connection to the self, a day for deeper nourishment and enjoyment in a beautiful tranquil setting.

A nourishing two course lunch as well as freshly baked scones, tea and coffee, are also provided.

The aim is to create a warm atmosphere where we will awaken the senses, meet like minded people, deepen our understanding of ourselves and explore the sensual in our everyday lives.

Prior experience of body work and personal therapy work, whilst desirable, is not essential.
